- To analyse and evaluate air standard cycles.
- To analyse and evaluate Steam power cycles.
- Summarize the governing concepts of Refrigeration and Air conditioning.
- To introduce various modes of heat transfer, related to real time scenarios of thermodynamics applied in engineering practice.
PR3351 – Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering Syllabus
Unit I: Basics Of Thermodynamics
Systems, Zeroth law, first law. Heat and work transfer in flow and non-flow processes. Second law- KelvinPlanck and Clausius statement, Concept of Entropy -Clausius inequality, Entropy change in non-flow processes.
Unit II: Air Standard Cycle
Otto, Diesel, Dual and Brayton cycles – Air standard efficiency and Mean effective pressure.
Unit III: Vapour Power Cycles
Properties of steam – Rankine cycle – Steam Nozzles Principles of Psychrometry and refrigeration systems- Vapour compression – Vapour absorption – Coefficient of performance, Properties of refrigerants – Basic Principle and types Air conditioning systems.
Unit IV: Compressors And Jet Propulsion
Compressors types – performance of Reciprocating compressors – Simple jet propulsion system – Thrust rocket motor – Specific impulse.
Unit V: Heat Transfer
Conduction in simple plane, radial and composite walls – Basics of Convective heat transfer Fundamentals of Radioactive heat transfer – Flow through heat exchangers (LMTD and NTU).
