Questions 16. Read the following excerpt from ‘The Scholarship Jacket’ and answer the questions that follow. Each question carries one score. 1 x 6 = 6

We couldn’t participate in sports at school because there were registration fees, uniform costs, and trips out of town; so, even though our family was quite agile and athletic there would never be a school sports jacket for us. This one, the scholarship jacket, was our only chance.

In May, close to graduation, spring fever had struck as usual with a vengeance. No one paid any attention in class, instead, we started out of the windows and at each other, wanting to speed up the last few weeks of school. I despaired every time I looked in the mirror. Pencil thin, not a curve anywhere. I was called ‘beanpole’ and ‘string bean’ and I knew that’s what I looked like. That really wasn’t much for a fourteen-year-old to work with, I thought, as I absentmindedly wandered from my history class to the gym…

Bare
But all the time

Sit in a cage and sing?

But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring!
O father and mother if buds are nipped.
And blossoms have blown away;
And if the tender plants are stripped
Of their joy in the springing day,
By Sorrow and care’s dismay
How shall the summer arise in joy,
Or the summer fruits appear?
Or how shall we gather what griefs destroy,
Or bless the mellowing year,
When the blasts of winter appear?

Questions 12-16 Read the following story and answer the questions given below. Each question carries one score. 1 x 5 = 5
There was a time when all housework was done by the women or girls in the family. Few husbands never dreamt of washing up, preparing breakfast or attending the baby. Such duties were no concern of theirs. And the normal schoolboy assumed that if help were needed at home, his sisters would be called on to give it. The whole family supported the view that the male child could not or should not clean, mend, wash, cook or make beds.

Things are very different today. Doctors, barristers or managers find nothing shameful in putting on an apron to help in the kitchen or nursery and even boast of being good at washing clothes and personal linen. The schoolboy is more often expected to help his mother now.

One reason for the change is the shortage of domestic servants. Girls could once be found to do the hard work in middle and upper-class homes. Such girls nowadays either go to schools or work in factories. Thus, the wife now does the household work with the aid of Labour saving machines, and she expects some help from her husband and children.

The School Boy is a poem written by William Blake in the pastoral edition that flowers on the downsides of formal learning. In the poem ‘The School Boy’ the poet himself is a young boy who is very joyful to get up early in the fresh and delightful summer morning. The poet is very disappointed to attain the school in the sweet summer morning because he is very tired and even puzzled under the strict supervision of his teacher. Actually, he wishes to enjoy the mirth of summer and he expresses that instead of enjoying the pleasures of summer, the child has to attend the school where every child pass their days in boredom and dismay. The boy compares a child with a bird. According to his view, a bird which is born cheerful and jovial can never sing songs when caged. Similarly, a child if remained under the umbrella of annoying fear and tension can never enjoy the natural instincts of joy and playfulness. Instead, a world full of rigid course of discipline will ruthlessly take away the beautiful springs of a person’s life.

The metaphor ‘How can the bird that is born for joy. Sit in a cage and sing? is used to indicate the helpless situation of the boy. The boy complains to the highest authority to his father and mother that a budding child is pinched and swept off in the early stage of life. He has no one to care for. If misery withers the tender beautiful plants, the beautiful buds and the newborn buds summer can never be joyful. The child is asking his parents how will they give back what grief has destroyed. If plants are withered due to grief there will be no fruit in the season of autumn. This implies that if childhood pleasures are censored adult life will be utterly dry and unproductive. The rhyme scheme used in the poem is ababb.

The Pain behind Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne For his new film ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ Satyajit Ray needed to shoot a scene with a tiger. So he approached Bharat Circus Company. The manager was a Tamilian and he agreed to provide Satyajit Ray a tiger. Ray spoke to the ringmaster Mr.Thorat. He showed Ray the tiger. The shooting was in a suitable bamboo grove in Notun gram. A lorry with two fed tigers arrived. The crew placed the tripod facing the bamboo grove and the actors were arranged in such a way that they could be shown along with the tiger. A five-foot iron rod was fixed to the ground and a long wire at one end of the collar of the tiger was tied to it. When the door opened the tiger sprang out of its cage.

Instead of walking calmly it started prancing around with tremendous enthusiasm as if in a circus. After sometime when the tiger became calm, the remaining shots were taken. Later it was found that the shots didn’t come alright because the camera had failed to work properly. The scenes had to be shot again. Another bamboo grove in a village called Boral was found and a lorry with a tiger arrived there. A lot of people came to watch the shooting and the crowd was not ready to move from their position. When the door of the cage was opened the tiger emerged with a loud roar and charged straight at the villagers. All disappeared from the scene. The shots were taken again when the tiger became normal.

Oh my God. I am terribly frightened after today’s incident. I got startled when a snake fell on to my left arm. If I had moved, it would have stricken me. I sat on the chair holding my breath. When the snake turned its head it saw its reflection in the mirror. It slowly crept on the table and moved towards the mirror. I ran for my life without turning back to my friend’s home. The next morning when I returned home I found my house looted by some burglars. Anyway, I am going to file a complaint to the police. Hope I get back my belongings.

Dear Julie,
Hope you are doing good. How are all at home? Hope your exams are over. I am writing this letter to tell you about an urgent matter. You know that it is my dream to win the scholarship jacket and I really worked hard for it. Every year the scholarship jacket is given to the valedictorian of the school. My sister Rosie had won the scholarship jacket a few years back. I happened to overhear a conversation between my teachers one day. They were discussing me and the scholarship Jacket. Mr. Schmidt spoke in favor of me but Mr. Boone wanted Joann to get the jacket. She was rich and her father was a member of the board. I was very sad. The next day I was summoned to the principles office. He told me that there was a change in the policy that year regarding the Scholarship jacket. I had to pay fifteen dollars off I needed the Scholarship Jacket. You know about my family I can never afford that. Why did the management change the policy? I reached home and asked my grandfather to give me the money to pay for the jacket. But he denied my request and told me that if I paid for it then it would not be a Scholarship Jacket. The next day I met the Principal and told him that I was not ready to pay for the Scholarship Jacket. I was so heartbroken and even told him that he could give the Scholarship Jacket to Joann. On Hearing this the Principal was moved and he decided to make an exception in my case and thus I won the Jacket.

I don’t know how to express my happiness.

Thanks to grandpa. If he hadn’t given me the right advice I wouldn’t have received the Jacket I wish I could meet you. Convey my regards to all at home. Do reply me as soon as you receive this letter,

lovingly
Your friend
Martha.

In her speech. The Danger of a Single Story’ Chimamanda Adichie explains the concept of what she calls a single story. She explains a single story to be a one-sided view of a particular individual such as Africans. She explains that many individuals view things as what they have been taught. The explanation to this that she gives states that her American roommate, felt sympathy for her before even having seen her simply for knowing that she was from Africa. Her roommate did not believe that Adichie could have lived a life very similar to that of a middle-class American citizen.

She believed that all Africans lived in poverty and suffers from the rebellious war that has taken place in Africa. Adichie also explains how she became a victim to the single story in a cover to Mexicans. Adichie also explains how her professor in college did not accept her literature to be correctly African because it did not contain an Abu sine father or any of the characteristics that stories of Africa should contain. Her professor stats this because he himself has fallen victim to a single story. Adichie explains that individuals see only one view of things and they believe it until they are shown differently.
