Every animal in a Hollywood film is well trained. It is not difficult to train a horse or a dog. But have you ever heard of trained ravens? Not just one or two, but nearly a hundred of them? Even this was made a possible in Hollywood when the creator of some of the best suspense films in the history of cinema, Alfred Hitchcock, decided to make a film called Birds. In the story, birds from all over the world start attacking humans.

Hitch cock needed a variety of birds, but what was required in the target number was ravens. Notices were placed in the press all over the United States, asking people to contact the filmmaker if they knew how to get hold of trained ravens. Someone replied within a few days. He was asked to bring his birds, and he arrived with almost a hundred trained ravens. Admittedly, their training had not gone very bad. The young homeopath lived in a rented room that was not electrified. He had just set up his medical practice and his earnings were meager. One summer night he returned to his house after his meal. When he entered the room he heard a sound. He thought that they were rats. As the room was not electri fled, he lighted a kerosene lamp which was on the table. After changing his dress, he went to sleep but he couldn’t sleep as it was very hot. He went out to the veranda for a little air, but the wind God didn’t bless him.

When he came back, his eyes got struck in the mirror. He was tempted to look at the mirror. He said, ‘ I am very handsome. I have to shave daily Then another lovely thought struck him. He wanted to marry a woman doctor with good medical practice. She had to be fat for a valid reason. If he had made any silly mistake and needed to run away she should not be able to run after him and catch him.

With such thoughts in his mind, he resumed his seat in the chair in front of the table. Suddenly he heard a thud sound and felt something slither along his shoulder. He was frozen as he understood that it was a big snake. If he had moved, it would strike him. He sat there holding his breath. The snake then turned its head and saw its reflection in the mirror. Like the homeopath, the snake was also conscious of its beauty. It slowly crept onto the table and moved towards the mirror. Oh! My God, he felt relieved and ran away from there. When he came back the next morning from his friend’s house he saw that his house was looted by some thief. Only his dirty vest was left behind. He thought that it was a snake which was taken by its own beauty.

Answer 29.
The speaker, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, begins by telling us a story about what she would write as a child. She would write stories that were similar to the foreign stories she read which contained white skinned children with blue eyes, nothing like her. Until she found African stories is when she realized that people like her could be in stories. If we hear or read stories about a part of the world we tend to perceive that part of the world as the stories describe those places. Those stories we receive make us feel certain emotions, emotions like pity, towards the people that live in those places. Adichie gives an experience of her own about a single story.

Answer 30.
Grandfather or granddad in the story ‘Vanka’ written by eminent short story writer ‘Anton Chekhov’ is a wonderful character. We come across the character from the words of the protagonist itself. The grandfather, Konstantin Makarich, is a jolly man, his face was always crinkling with laughter. Vanka and he had a wonderful time together. Based on this description of Vanka, it would be fair for the reader to assume that Konstantin Makarich will come at once to rescue his grandson once he hears of his grandson’s plight.

As the story progresses we realize that it is none other than the granddad Konstantin Makarich who sent Vanka away to Moscow to the shoemaker Alyakhin, when Pelageya Vanka’s mother died. If he were a kind-hearted man he would have raised this young boy with him. At the end of the story one may think even if the letter somehow reached Makarich, it is most likely that he would not have come and rescued his grandchild. The jolly man as described by Vanka turns to be a villain of the story. Credit goes to the craftsmanship Anton Chekhov for portraying such a wonderful character.
