Careers at Indian Air Force (IAF)

All the candidates who wish to join the Indian Air Force, have to visit the official website career section and check for the number of posts defined as per the qualifications. Only the candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria for each post are permitted to apply. IAF Entrance Exam Dates

To join the Indian Air Force, candidates have to give the entrance exams. Here are the following dates for the exams.

Join IAF – Flying Branch

As a Graduate/ Engineer, candidates can enter the Flying branch via the Air Force Academy. There are three modes of entrance for Graduates/ Engineers to join the Flying branch, given below the following:

  1. CDSE (Combined Defence Services exam) (For Male candidates only)
  2. NCC Special entrance (For Male candidate and Female candidate)
  3. AFCAT entrance (SSC for Male candidate and Female candidate)
CDSE (Combined Defence Services exam)Male candidates can enter via this mode of entrance and will get a Permanent Commission. Advertisements are issued by UPSC in the months of November and August.
NCC Special entranceAs an Air Wing Senior Division ’C’ Certificate holder of the National Cadet Corps, Candidate can apply to the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force. Male candidate & woMale candidate can join the Air Force via this mode of entrance. Permanent Commission offered for Male candidate and Short Service Commission for Male candidate and Female candidate. Advertisement for NCC Special entrance is issued by the IAF in the months of June and December.
AFCAT entranceCandidates can apply via AFCAT for Short Service Commission (SSC) in the Flying Branch. Short Service Commission in the Flying branch is for 14 years with no further extension. Advertisements for AFCAT are issued by the IAF in the months of June and December.

Eligibility for CDSE

  • Age – 20 to 24 years (at the time of start of course)
  • Nationality – Indian
  • Marital Status – Single
  • Gender – Male candidates only.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Three year Graduate in any discipline from a recognised University (with subjects Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level)/BE/B Tech (Four Year Course).
    • Final Year/semester students, who do not have any backlogs can apply and they have to produce a Degree certificate issued by the University as per the date mentioned in the advertisement.
    • No Percentage Bar for CDSE entrance.

Eligibility for NCC Special entrance

  • Age –20 to 24 years (at the time of start of course). Candidates who hold valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India), have the upper age limit relaxation up to 26 years (at the time of the start of course).
  • Nationality – Indian
  • Marital Status – Single
  • Gender – Male candidate and Female candidate.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Minimum 50% marks in each subject (Maths & Physics) at 10 + 2 level.
    • Three years graduation with minimum 60% marks in any discipline from a recognised University

OR

    • BE/B Tech with minimum 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised University

OR

    • Cleared Section A & B exam of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised University
    • Final Year/semester students can apply, provided they should not have any present backlogs at the time of AFSB Testing and should produce a Degree certificate issued by the University, mentioned in the advertisement.
    • NCC Air Wing Senior Division ’C’ certificate, valid up to two years before the date of advertisement.

Eligibility for AFCAT Entrance

  • Age – 20 to 24 years. Candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India), upper age limit is relaxed up to 26 years.
  • Nationality – Indian
  • Marital Status – Single
  • Gender – Male candidate and Female candidate.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Minimum of 60% marks each subject (Maths & Physics) at 10+2 level.
    • Three years of graduation in any discipline who have scored minimum 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised University
    • OR
    • BE/B Tech with minimum 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised University.
    • OR
    • Cleared Section A & B exam of Associate Membership of Institute Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India, with minimum 60% from a recognised University

Join IAF – Ground Duty (Technical) Branches

Candidates who belong to technical trades or have done engineering are only eligible to apply for this branch. After joining this team, candidates will propel and manage the team to make sure that IAF remains airworthy. Candidates will be taking care of some of the most valuable and customised equipment in the world in this branch.  Advertisements for AFCAT are issued by the IAF in the months of June and December.

Eligibility Criteria for Ground Duty (Technical Branches)

  • Age – 20 to 26 years
  • Nationality – Indian
  • Marital Status: Applicants under the age of 25 years should be unmarried.
  • Final year students can apply if they do not have any current backlog at the time of AFSB testing. They should produce provisional/ original degree certificates issued by the University.

Depending upon the Candidate stream of Engineering and subjects studied, the Candidate could join one of the sub-branches of the Ground Duty (Technical) branch.

Eligibility for Aeronautical Engineer Electronics

  1.  Minimum of 60% scored in each subject ( Physics and Mathematics) at 10+2 level

JOIN IAF – Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branches

The Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branch, managing human and material resources, is the mechanism that steers the Indian Air Force.

General Eligibility Criteria for Non-Technical Branches

  • Age – 20 to 26 Years for Graduates and Post Graduates (at the time of the start of course).
  • Marital Status – Applicants below the age of 25 years should be Unmarried.
  • Nationality – Indian.

Administration Branch

  • Answerable for the effective management of both human and material resources. Some officers of the Administration Branch are chosen and trained to carry forward the following duties also:
    • Air Traffic Controller: To maintain the flow of traffic in order and airspace management.
    • Fighter Controller: For effective airspace management, it involves close contact and supervision between the air and radar
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Three-year Graduation Degree in any discipline with 60% marks or equivalent from a recognised university or cleared section A & B exam of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent,  from a recognised university.
Accounts Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Male candidate & Female candidate)
  • Responsible for the financial management of funds. Also, work as an internal auditor to make sure a zero-defect audit from outside agencies.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • B.Com passed with a minimum 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised university
Logistics Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Male candidate & Female candidate)
  • Responsible for materials management of all Air Force resources. Candidates would ensure efficient supervision of inventories, and be involved in the procurement processes of various ranges of equipment.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Three Year Graduate Degree in any discipline passed with 60% marks or equivalent from a recognised university or cleared section A & B exam of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent, from a recognised university.
Education Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Male candidate & Female candidate)
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Passed 10+2 and Post-Graduation with 50% in any discipline including integrated courses offering PG (Single degree without permission to exit and lateral entrance) and with 60% marks in Graduation in any discipline
    • For integrated courses (single degree without permission to exit and lateral entrance), the minimum duration must be as per prevailing UGC guidelines with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.
Meteorology Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Male candidate & Female candidate)
  • As a Meteorology Branch Officer Candidate would be involved in handling the latest satellite imagery and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, Candidate would render specific advice to the operators on all aspects of weather.
  • Educational Qualifications
    • Post Graduation in any science stream/Mathematics/Statistics/Geography/Computer Applications/Environmental Science/Applied Physics/Oceanography/Agricultural Meteorology/Ecology & Environment/Geo-physics/Environmental Biology. All candidates should have passed with a minimum 50% marks in aggregate in all papers of Post Graduation put together (provided Maths & Physics were studied at Graduation level with a minimum of 55% marks in both).

What is the Permanent Commission in Indian Air Force?

A Permanent Commission means a career in the Air Force till you retire. Permanent Commission Officers will continue to serve until the age of receiving pensions.

Candidates who come under 25 years of age should be unmarried when the course will begin. Widows, Widowers, and divorcees (with or without encumbrances) below 25 years of age are also ineligible. Marriage is not permitted during training. Married candidates whose ages are above 25 years are eligible to apply on the condition that they will not get any married accommodation and also they cannot live out with family, during the training period.
