India’s Neighbours Essay
India is a vast country having extensive borders. Its total borderline is nearly 15,000 kms. Its Northern frontier stretches from Kashmir and goes up to Arunchal Pradesh and Assam, touching the borders of Myanmar and Bangladesh.
On the periphery of India, lie many countries. In the North, Kashmir is bordered by Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. Ladakh is at the tri-junction where the frontiers of these three countries kiss one another. Presently these three countries do not show any overtly friendly relationship with India.
Nestled in the eastern part of Himalayas lies the kingdom of Bhutan. The Himalayan kingdom has a benevolent king. The customs, costumes, religions and manners are quite akin to India. In fact, there are striking similarities between this tiny Himalayan kingdom and India. Then there is the beautiful Himalayan country, Nepal. Nepal is a country situated in the heart of the mighty Himalayas. Its capital is Kathmandu. Kathmandu is a lovely valley. India and Nepal’s relations are based more upon close cultural and historical links than social, political and economic links.
The borders of India also touches the plateau of Tibet. This heavenly kingdom often called ‘the root of the world.’ Tibet is a Shangri-La, a land of tranquillity, and people here mostly follow the teachings of Buddha.
Pakistan is the closest neighbour of India. This country came into existence when India was partitioned in 1947. The relationships with Pakistan have never been friendly inspite of willingness at both sides of the border.
Another neighbour of India is Bangladesh, sandwiched between Assam and West Bengal. Bangladesh was born after much bloodshed on December 16th, 1971.
Myanmar is another neighbour of India whose borders touches Assam. Sri Lanka is still another neighbour of India. It is an island that lies in the Indian Ocean, about 70 miles from Kanyakumari.
Thus, India has many neighbours around her. Some of them are quite friendly while others carry on with a negative attitude towards India. But Indians want to be friendly with all her neighbours.
