Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards bestowed in a number of categories by Swedish and Norwegian committees in recognition of academic, cultural and/or scientific advances. The will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel established the prizes in 1895. The prizes in Chemistry, Literature. Peace, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine were first awarded in 1901. The related Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was established by Sweden’s central bank in 1968.

The Nobel Prize itself was made of a mixture of gold and silver with 24 carat or 4.8 g gold coating. Between 1901 and 2015, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 573 times to 900 people and organisations. With some receiving the Nobel Prize more than once, this makes a total of 870 individuals (821 men and 49 women) and 23 organisations.

The prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the peace prize, which is awarded in Oslo, Norway. The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available in the fields of literature, medicine, physics, chemistry, peace, and economics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences; the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; the Swedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize in Literature; and the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded not by a Swedish organisation but by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The various prizes are awarded yearly. Each recipient or laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma and a sum of money which is decided by the Nobel Foundation. As of 2012, each prize was worth 8 million SEK (equivalent to US$ 1.2 million, Euro 0.93 million or £0.6 million). The prize is not awarded posthumously; however, if a person is awarded a prize and dies before receiving it, the prize may still be presented. Though the average number of laureates per prize increased substantially during the 20th century, a prize may not be shared among more than three people.

Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
It is agreed that disasters have become a way of life. We simply can’t wish them away. Be it earthquakes, cyclones, floods, landslides, sea-erosion or fires. But we are definitely in a stage to marginalise their effects. Because these calamities by themselves do not kill people, it is the structurally deficient buildings that give way, burying within themselves the hapless many.

The 2001 earthquake in Gujarat had indeed shaken all of us. Whereas Bhuj, at the epicentre of the quake, turned into debris, many a building in Ahmedabad, 400 kms away, also simply collapsed. Surprising was the fact that the lower floors of many buildings sank into the soil. In the cyclone affected coastal Andhra and Odisha, a majority of the houses were razed to the ground due to inadequate structural provisions.

Stories of major fires in buildings in urban areas are too frequent to be missed by any of us. Why is it that the same intensity of earthquake in Gujarat killed over 30000 people and destroyed over 3.5 lakh houses, while in Seattle in the USA, the same intensity earthquake two weeks later killed only one person, that too of heart attack, with no damage to buildings?

Sadly, a major portion of this loss to life and property was, in fact, avoidable, had the habitations been constructed with structural safety precautions and disaster resistant provisions, as already available in the National Building Codes and Earthquake Codes and Enactments. With details on disaster proneness of various regions for natural calamities already available through the Vulnerability Atlas, what is needed is a determined effort to enforce a techno-legal regime to ensure incorporation of safety provisions in new construction as well strengthening of existing vulnerable buildings. So also for fire safety; we need to design and construct buildings with fire safety provisions. Insisting on annual renewal certificates to ensure proper maintenance could avoid many a fire hazard.
structurally safe for all situations. This never used to happen earlier.

  1. Name some disasters that have become a way of life.
  2. What happened in the Gujarat earthquake?
  3. What is the Vulnerability Atlas and how is it useful?
  4. What should be done for fire safety?
  5. Which word in paragraph 1 means the same as ‘unlucky/ unfortunate’?

The police say that he was hit hard on the head while resisting a robbery and died because of the blow. Fingerprint experts, sniffer dogs and investigators with magnifying glasses moved all around his compound. They even questioned us about any noises at night. Her melodious voice charms the poet so much that he stops there for a while and listens to it with rapt attention. The Emperor of Lilliput granted him permission to do so after stating that Gulliver must not hurt its inhabitants or their houses. He liked what he saw there.

As Gulliver passed through the streets and entered the town, the Lilliputians assembled on windows and roofs of their houses to see Gulliver. Gulliver was an object of curiosity to them, as they were to Gulliver. The Emperor’s palace was situated in the center of the city. Lord Munodi plays the important role of showing the possibility of having one’s own opinion and thoughts within a brainwashed community. However, these are the exact qualities that are hated by the other people of Lagado and his being a member of an influential family and having a large estate are the things that are stopping him from banishment.

He is quite similar to Gulliver, as he also suffers alienation from his community. While the inhabitants of Lagado pursue their attempts like trying to extract sunbeams from cucumbers and trying to eliminate all verbs and adjectives from their language, Munodi is a rare example of practical intelligence. Having tried unsuccessfully to convince his colleagues of their misguided public policies, he has given up and is content to practise what he preaches on his own estates. In his kindness to strangers, Munodi is also different from the other Laputans and Lagadons. He entertained Gulliver in a most hospitable manner.
There is also a patriotic sense in him, which can be seen when Gulliver criticises his country and its people. Munodi says that it was too soon to form a judgement about the people, and that every country had its own customs.

Three Men in a Boat

The three friends had been craving for mustard and when they couldn’t find it, they became gloomy. Just then George found a tin containing pineapple and excitement seemed to return to them.

Then George tried a pair of scissors and the scissors flew up and nearly pierced his eye. While they were dressing the wounds, the writer tried to make a hole in the tin with the spiky end of the hitcher. The hitcher slipped and jerked him out between the boat and the bank into two feet of muddy water. Then they all got angry. They tried to open it with a sharp stone and the mast. It was George’s straw hat that saved his life that day. Harris got off with merely a flesh wound. Then the writer took the tin off himself. He hammered at it with the mast. But they were not able to make a hole in it. The tin lying on the grass appeared to be making fun of them.

He was full of unnatural notions about being a credit to his parents and an honour to the school. He used to get ill about twice a week so that he couldn’t go to school. He would get diseases throughout the year like bronchitis, rheumatic fever or hay fever at Christmas. He would go out in a November fog and come home with sunstroke. He suffered terribly with toothache, neuralgia and earache. He was never without a cold and always had chilblain. He would sob in bed because they won’t let him do Latin exercises and took his German grammar away from him. Then, when the holidays were about to begin, he would get well while the other boys fell ill. That is why his character was unusual.
