2. I revolved these circumstances in my mind and determined to apply myself more particularly to those branches of natural philosophy which relate to physiology. I became acquainted with the science of anatomy. After days and nights of continuous labour and weakness, I succeed in discovery the cause of generation and life. I became myself capable of bestowing animation into lifeless matter.

Ramita’s brother Maank had literally vanished six months before. One evening he went out to get some milk and egg for the morning. Half an hour later when they hadn’t returned, the family started looking for him. No one seemed to have seen Mayank. That night the Police were called. It was a nightmare for the family. Ramita’s mother took to her bed, wracked with grief and guilt. Ramita’s father became a hollow, silent shell. Ramita held them all together, clinging to the hope that Mayank would magically return.
The stranger told Ramita that Mayank had been the victim of a hit and run accident six months . before. The stranger had found him lying on the road, and taken him to hospital. As Mayank had lost his memory, he could not tell anyone who he was. The stranger remained in touch with Mayank and as bits of Mayank’s memory returned, he had been able to trace the family. He gave Ramita the address of the hospital. With Joy and anticipation bursting inside her, Ramita rushed out of the door-to bring her brother home.

When I received Lencho’s letter, I felt shocked and discouraged. I did not expect it from Lencho. I had involved my whole department in helping this fellow. It took me a lot of efforts to arrange seventy pesos for him. But this man proved ungrateful. He called us a bunch of cheats and accused us of stealing money. I see no point in sending the remaining amount to this ungrateful fellow. If I send him the remaining amount he will be convinced that we had cheated him. This would damage the image of the post office employees. Hope he would soon come to know the reality.

Money can bring happiness but sometimes it ruins our life. The more money we have, the more greed it brings with it. It is therefore essential to be satisfied. Living on borrowed money can only provide us with temporary happiness. Once it fades away, it leads to loss of trust and relations. The contentment is a must in life. Show-off is bad. It should always be remembered. ‘Never be a borrower nor a lender’.
It is the honest dealing which gives long lasting happiness. We have to be honest in everything that comes across in our life. The more we borrow, the more we get trapped in the debts. If we are happy with our own possessions, we can save ourselves from such debt traps and lead a happy and contented life. Otherwise borrowing leads to our destruction.
Answer 11.
The two years of stay in hiding changed the fun loving, vivacious Anne of the earlier years. She now felt that she would not like to go back to that life. She did not want the old Anne back as her opinion had changed radically.
She now thought that it was better to be liked for what one does and for one’s character rather than be liked for frivolous reasons. She had outgrown the carefree life that she enjoyed earlier. She no longer had fits of crying and squabbling. She began to see herself in a new light, her faults and her shortcomings became clearer to her.
She tried to get close to her father but was not able to do so. His constant reproaches were tiresome and left her terribly depressed. In the later half of 1943 however things changed for the better. Everyone started treating her as a grown up woman. It was only after her dream of Peter Schiff that she discovered that her longing was not for a girl friend but for a boy friend. She began to focus on the beauty that existed in the world of nature. She had love for Peter and for all good things.

Bep had a fit of nerves in the last week of September. She had been sent out too often by one resident or the other in the Annexe. At times she was asked to go to the market and fetch something quickly by her friends which meant yet another trip to bring something that someone needed. This also made her feel that she had done something wrong. Kleiman was ill; Miep was at home with a cold and Bep herself had a sprained ankle.
She was overloaded with lots of office work which she had to finish. She had her own worries in her personal life besides a grumbling father at home. All this was enough to cause her mental as well as physical stress. No one except Anne understood her unhappy situation. She advised her that if she deliberately refused to agree to their demands by claiming that she had no time then people would make fun of her. This according to Anne was the only way that Bep could recover from her fit of nerves.

In addition to this other subjects like French, German, Geography and Arithmetic were also taught. Helen learned German, as she found French difficult to understand. Instead of applying logic, she depended on questioning in Arithmetic. But the school provided many opportunities for making learning a joyful experience. The school also provided the facilities of excursions during the spring season.
They visited west point, Tarrytown, the home of Washington Irving, where Helen walked through ‘Sleepy Hollow’. The teachers at the Wright Humason school were always planning on how to give their pupils every advantage that those who hear and enjoy, how they might make much of the tendencies and passive memories in the cases of the little ones and lead them out of the cramping circumstances in which their lives were set. Helen enjoyed the school for two years and held happy memories.
OR
Helen used to feel hopeless. Whenever she appeared for any examination she felt to prepare for the examination but the examinee made her do a lot of rote learning. Examinations defeated the purpose of understanding a subject. According to her, examinations curbed the liking of a person for a subject.
She found it difficult to cram so many facts and figures. Exams caused her stress and anxiety. If one could not recall the desired matter from the ocean of knowledge, it can lead to the examinee’s brooding. She felt that examinations harass students. They make students hate books. She felt that the whole purpose of learning so many facts and figures went in vain if a question asked in the examination was vague. In spite of her dislike for examinations, Helen could get through all her examinations with flying colours.
