SECTION-A
Reading — 20 Marks

Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. Most people love the relief that monsoon brings from summer, but some poor souls find themselves besieged by aches and pains. These could be pains in the joints, increased stiffness and a feeling of pain in old injuries.

2. Though many studies have tried to find a scientific reason for the rise in sensations of pain during a weather change, nothing conclusive has been found so far. One body of modem research says that increased pains are due to the drop in atmospheric pressure, due to which the fluids in the body swell, causing pain symptoms. Another school of thought describes rainy weather pains as psychosomatic.

3. Ayurveda describes the rainy season as the time when two kinds of energies work together negatively: vata energy, which causes movement and also body pains and gas formation, increases, while digestive energy decreases, leading to higher changes of indigestion. Here’s what you could do to avoid these:
If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis

• Avoid foods like curd, sweets, rice, pickle, tomato ketchup, brinjal and sour drinks.
• Reduce joint pain and inflammation with this ginger and honey drink: Crush some ginger, boil it in three cups of water till it’s reduced to two cups, and add a teaspoon of honey. Drink it warm twice a day.
• Add garlic to your food. Garlic is anti-inflammatory.
• Drink turmeric milk: Add a pinch of turmeric to boiling milk, consume just before bedtime.
• Warm sesame seed (til) oil and massage the knee joint. For Aches in Bones and Muscles
• Add a few drops of peppermint oil to warm til oil and massage.
• A hot fomentation is particularly useful in this season.
• Avoid salt in your dinner on particularly painful days.
• Ensure you have a calcium-rich diet. Seeds (til, sunflower, flaxseeds) and nuts are rich in calcium, and so is paneer. ‘
• If the pain is severe, check your Vitamin D levels.
• Avoid using the air-conditioner continuously as it aggravates body pain.

Question 1.1.
On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any eight of the following questions in brief:

Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
1. World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28 every year with the aim of raising global awareness of hepatitis—a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E—and encourage prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

2. Although, we have not seen any major spike in water-borne hepatitis till now, usually the numbers go up during this season. It is, however, easy to avoid the infections. All you need to do is shun food from road-side stalls and drink filtered water,” said Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, senior consultant of internal medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

3. Unlike the blood-bome Hepatitis B and C, Hepatitis A and E are usually self-limiting and resolve within days or a couple of weeks and have no long-term impact. However, in some serious cases, it may lead to acute liver failure.

4. According to estimates, one in a thousand children and one in a hundred adults may end up needing a liver transplant because of acute liver failure caused by severe bout of water-borne hepatitis.

5. The symptoms of water-borne hepatitis include acute fever, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, jaundice (yellowing of skin and the whites of the eyes) and dark coloured urine. “Patients coming in with symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea must also get tested for Hepatitis. There are chances that the symptoms be confused for malaria or typhoid initially. In such cases, doctors might prescribe paracetamol, which gets metabolized in the liver, putting additional pressure on the diseased organ,” said SK Sarin, Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS).

6. Currently, there is one vaccine available against Hepatitis A. “The vaccine is effective but whether or not it should be prescribed is debatable. It is believed that the vaccine is given to people who have chronic liver diseases as a percentage of their liver does not work and hepatitis adds to the problem.

However, in All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) study we saw that more than 98% of chronic liver patients already had 98% immunity to Hepatitis A,” said Dr. Anoop Saraya, head of the department of gastroenterology at AIIMS. ‘ In another study of 12-year-old school children, the department of gastroenterology found that the level of immunity was 98.4%.

7. “The vaccine is only needed if a person does not have immunity and someone in the house has the disease,” he said.

The rapid speed with which technology has developed no doubt has developed in materialistic progress but has seeped out the emotional aspect of modem man. The high expectations of youngsters make them money minded. They forget their elders in their modernity and also that these old people have gone through the ups and downs of life and have vast experience of living a happy and successful life.

Old people can guide them, give them valid suggestions of solving their life problems. But today’s generation thinks that their ideas are also old and obsolete like them. The youngsters in the family have become so busy that they find little time to sit and talk with their elders in the family. So old people feel lonely and neglected.

Sonu and Monu were two brothers. They had two sisters, both lived nearby. But once on the day of Rakhi, they were waiting for their sisters, but they did not come. Sonu and Monu were thinking why they had not come for Rakhi. Till afternoon there was no information about their coming. Sonu and Monu did not know what to do because both of the sisters had a fight last week and they argued with each other and declared that they would not see each other’s face any more.

Sonu and Monu now realised why they had not turned up. Meanwhile they called up their elder sister Deepa and asked her about her arrival. Deepa told that she would come in the absence of the younger sister, Tanu. Tanu was also not interested to be in front of Deepa. Both Sonu and Monu discussed the matter with their wives and arranged separate time for both the sisters. Both Tanu and Deepa came one after another and in a smooth way celebrated Rakhi.

OR

Once upon a time two poor merchants lived in a city. Their names were Raghu and Raman. They decided to travel to distant lands to become rich. Raghu found two ancient boxes. They were full of gold coins.
The two merchants were very happy. So, they returned home. When they were outside their city. Raghu said, “Friend, half of this treasure is yours. Please take one box. “No!” replied Raman. “Thieves may rob us if we have all the gold coins with us. Let’s hide these treasure boxes in the forest and take only a hundred gold coins each. When we need more, we can come back together.

Raghu agreed. They hid the treasure boxes in the hollow of an old Banyan tree and went home. Raman was a greedy man. He began to think of the hidden treasure in the hollow of the banyan tree. He wanted both the boxes for himself. So, he made a wicked plan. That night he went to the forest done, took the boxes and hid them is his house.
After a few days, Raghu asked Raman to go with him to the forest. Early next morning, they went to the forest. But the boxes were not in the hollow of the banyan tree.

Raman pretended to be angry and shouted, “You wicked man! You have stolen the Treasure.” Raghu was shocked. He understood that Raman had cheated him. But what would be done? Raman complained to the city judge that Raghu had robbed his treasure and should be sent to prison. The judge could not decide the case. Raman said to the judge, “Sir, Let us go to the Banyan tree. Nearby is a Peepal tree. The Goddess of the forest lives in it.

She will tell us the truth.” The judge agreed. Meanwhile, Raman told his father to hide in the Peepal tree and pretend to be the Goddess. The old man agreed. Next morning, the judge, his officers, Raghu and Raman went to the forest. Raman joined his palms, bowed in front of the Peepal tree and said, “Tell us who is the thief, Raghu or I?” A strange voice spoke out from the tree trunk, “Raghu came one dark night and stole the two boxes. The judge ordered his officers to arrest Raghu.

Raghu fell on his knees and pleaded, “Respected judge, please give me fifteen minutes. Then I shall go with your officers.” He quickly collected same dry twigs and set it on fire at the bottom of the Peepal tree. Thick smoke filled the air. Suddenly, an old man ran out shouting. “Help! Help! Help! Fire! Fire!” The judge understood Raman’s trick and put him in prison. Raghu went home happily.

1. Nelson Mandela, in his childhood, enjoyed the freedom to roam around and enjoy the nature. It was an illusion. As a student, he wanted transitory freedom for himself alone. In his youth, he yearned for basic, honourable freedoms not to be obstructed in an awful life.

2. Maxwell was worried about Mij’s welfare. Moreover Mij was exhausted and wounded. He dreaded being in the box. Maxwell also wanted Mij to be free. The air hostess allowed him to save Mij on his knee. The narrator says so out of gratitude for her sympathy and kindness.

3. The lawyer was made to deliver summons instead of preparing legal briefs. He had to go to the dirty and shadowy places and meet criminals. He was even beaten up by some of them. Therefore he hated his work.

4. The thief did it to prove his honesty and loyalty for Anil. He had won Anil’s trust. He had . no hidden purpose and was grateful to Anil. His smile was different as it was natural. It came without any effort. It came by itself.

5. Horace Danby was a typical thief. It is clear through his activities. He robbed just one safe in a year. Second point is that he robbed only rich man. He never wanted to hurt anyone. Even he never carried any weapon. He robbed safe only to purchase books.

Answer 10.
Peggy was the most popular girl in the school. She was very pretty. Peggy made fun of Wanda because she always wore a faded blue dress. Peggy had many pretty clothes. Her hair was blonde. Maddie was her closest friend so both made fun of Wanda. They waited for her to have some fim with her. On asking Wanda would tell about a hundred dresses of different colours. Peggy was good at drawing and designing. She could copy a figure from a magazine exactly the same. Peggy was generally a kind-hearted loving, caring and friendly girl. She could not tolerate cruelty towards small children.

OR

Griffin was a brilliant scientist, no doubt. He conducted many experiments to discover a wonder drug for making one invisible and he discovered a rare drug which could make a person invisible. He misused his discovery in many acts in the story out of compulsion. After setting fire to his landlord’s house in a fit of revenge he had to become invisible to avoid being arrested. For becoming fully invisible he had to take off his clothes along with swallowing his drug. Thus he became a homeless wanderer without clothes and without money.

To save himself from the biting cold and hunger he had to enter a big London store invisibly and helped himself by stealing clothes and food. When shop assistants chased him, he had to remove the clothes. He again had to steal, and while doing this he knocked down Jaffers. Thus we see that he did everything out of compulsion.

Answer 11.
At the end, the diary of Anne Frank clearly brings out the two characteristic traits of her personality. She presents that paper is more patient than people. She finds it difficult and embarrassing to show her ‘real’ inner-self to the people. Anne felt that her parents had been extremely nice to her to the extent of spoiling her completely. She looks like a happy-go-lucky girl in public. The people in the secret Annexe think that she is a flirt, boy-crazy and talkative. Even when she is hurt she pretends that she does not bother. Anne’s father tried to check her rebellious spirit, but Anne had cured herself of her behaviour.

She felt that her father neither perceived the struggle she faced within herself, nor lent her a helping hand. Anne is a very sensitive and warm person. The readers get to see the serious and mature Anne when she pens down her thoughts and feelings for others. For her, nature was a better medicine. She knows how to dwell on serious issues and is concerned about them. Anne pondered upon her personality as being a ‘bundle of contradictions’. She thought that she had a dual personality—the world saw the frolicsome, easy-going Anne, while the nicer, softer Anne hid inside her.

OR

Margot is Anne’s elder sister. She is beautiful, gifted and always excels at school. She is not very close to her sister while Anne feels that their parents favour Margot over her. It is possible that Anne is jealous of her sister, something that she never admits. Margot does not get much coverage in Anne’s diary because the sisters did not have a very good rapport with each other. Both sisters have minor quarrels like any other sisters living in normal conditions.

Margot is Anne’s well wisher. She sees Anne as a friend with whom she can talk and share her feelings. Anne misunderstands her. She feels Margot is jealous of her because she has a relation with Peter. In an entry, Anne writes that Margot gets on her nerves constantly., However during their prolonged stay in the Annexe, the sisters seem to reach an understanding and become friendly. They even write letters to each other in which they reveal their feelings. Margot clarifies that she does not have any interest in Peter. In fact she has developed some kind of sisterly love for him. Margot encourages Anne to go ahead with her relation with Peter.

Helen was ambitious and she has written, at some time, she was quite different from others. Helen’s family did not know how to improve or control the situation of great frustration and anger in Helen. Her parents were also unable to understand what their blind and deaf daughter was trying to tell them. Helen tried hard while she was struggling to make them understand what she wanted, her family would be able to do that without making signs as Helen used to.

Helen tried hard to make them understand with her gestures but often could not and became helpless and angry and would often strike out at others. She became irritated and remembered how often she threw her tantrums. Helen struggled to communicate with people and make them understand what she wanted. This frustrated her and made her angry. Anne brought about a transformation that changed Helen’s life. With her help and that of others Helen learnt Braille and could read French, German and Latin.

When Helen’s parents approached Graham Bell for help, regarding their daughter as Dr. Bell was devoted in improving life for the deaf and had invented several instruments for them. Bell suggested them to approach the direction of the Perkins Institute for the blind. The director sent Miss Anne Sullivan. Anne herself had passed through difficult times and was also gradually losing her vision to trachoma, an eye disease, though she was never completely blind.

She graduated first in her class from Perkins Institute and she got the job that would change the course of her, as well as Helen’s life. The day Anne arrived at Keller’s residence was momentous. It was a day that Helen Keller later referred to as “my soul’s birthday”. Miss Sullivan proved a transformational boon for Helen. She started teaching Helen many basic things like how to dress, brush her hair and eat at a table.

Anne also immediately began to teach Helen to communicate by spelling words into her hand, beginning with ‘d-o-1-1-‘, for she had given Keller a doll as a present. Anne Sullivan was an inspiring and motivating figure for Helen. She brought great joy, energy, love and excitement to Helen’s dark life with her tact, quick sympathy, genius and great positivity.
