Aim Of Concept:
- Use the standard atmosphere tables and equations.
- Find lift and drag coefficient data from NACA plots.
- Apply the concept of static stability to flight vehicles.
- Describe the concepts of stress, strain, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and yield strength.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of dynamics relevant to orbital mechanics.
AS3301 – Elements of Aerospace Engineering Syllabus
Unit I: Standard Atmosphere
History of aviation – standard atmosphere – pressure, temperature and density altitude.
Unit II: Aerodynamics
Aerodynamic forces – Lift generation Viscosity and its implications – Shear stress in a velocity profile – Lagrangian and Eulerian flow field – Concept of a streamline – Aircraft terminology and geometry – Aircraft types – Lift and drag coefficients using NACA data.
Unit III: Performance And Propulsion
Viscous and pressure drag – flow separation – aerodynamic drag – thrust calculations -Thrust/power available and thrust/power required.
Unit IV: Aircraft Stability And Structural Theory
Degrees of freedom of aircraft motions – stable, unstable and neutral stability – concept of static stability – Hooke’s Law- brittle and ductile materials – moment of inertia – section modulus.
Unit V: Space Applications
History of space research – spacecraft trajectories and basic orbital manoeuvres – six orbital elements – Kepler’s laws of orbits – Newtons law of gravitation.
