A Dust Storm Essay

Dust storms are very common in northern parts of India. These are very frequent in the months of May and June. Its destructive power is really shocking.

Last year I was living in Rajasthan, a state that is largely desert land. Its sand dunes run into miles. One fine evening I went out for a walk with my friends. We started our walk at 5 p.m. As we were advancing, the sky became overcast with clouds. Then it became red. We saw something floating in the sky. These were the clouds of dense dust particles. Soon we were swept by the wind. The wind was quickly gouning in velocity. We stood under a tree. We were hit by a powerful gust of wind, full of dust. We were unable to see anything. Then there was a gale.

In this gale, we heard horrible and deafening sounds because of the breaking of the branches of the trees. We stood below a tree and clung to its trunk tightly with our hands. A complete darkness fell over the entire area. Nothing was visible. Shrieks and cries of the people were also heard. The roofs of some huts and houses were blown away. One of the branches of the tree under which we were standing also broke. But thank God, it did not fall upon us. The gale was coming at a terrific speed.

There was a loud clap of thunder and, it started raining. There was a heavy downpour. After some time, the dust in the atmosphere settled down. The sky became clear. Now we saw the ravages caused by the dust storm. Many trees had been uprooted. Tin sheets from the roofs of huts and houses had been blown away. Crops were damaged. Some people were seriously injured. Many families were rendered homeless. A number of cattle heads were lost as they ran blindly into uncovered wells.

This was the worst ever dust storm witnessed by me. The very map of the earth changed around us. The sand dunes from one place had been shifted to another place due to the powerful winds. The destruction which was inflicted upon the property and cattle, was incalculable.

We quietly made our journey back home. On our way there was the same painful scene. At some places the road was blocked by fallen trees. The aftermath of the dust storm presented a scene of destruction. This would perhaps be one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.
